Bringing an International Curriculum to Young People Worldwide

Saving Grace Education is a Cambridge Online Homeschool Distance Education Provider. We support homeschooling families from Reception through to AS Level. Our goal is to equip learners with international-standard knowledge while supporting the values of home education.

Important Note: We are not a Cambridge school, but a Cambridge homeschool provider. For Reception to Year 9, parents must register their child with the Department of Education in South Africa. From IGCSE to AS Level, students are private candidates and must register for exams through an official Cambridge exam centre.

IGCSE & AS Level Private Candidate Guide

About Private Candidacy

Saving Grace Education is a Cambridge Online Homeschool Distance Education Provider. We support homeschooling students from Reception to AS Level. Students who reach IGCSE and AS Level are considered private candidates. This means you are not registered with a full-time Cambridge school, and you must register yourself to write exams through a registered exam centre.

Important: Saving Grace Education is not a Cambridge school but a Cambridge homeschool provider. We guide and support you academically, but parents and students must manage final exam registration independently.

IGCSE & AS Level Exam Sessions

Cambridge International offers two official exam sessions each year:

  • May/June
  • October/November

Each subject includes 1 to 3 papers, and the exam session can last 4 to 6 weeks. Your final exam timetable will be based on your selected subjects.

How to Register for Exams

To write IGCSE or AS Level exams, you must register as a private candidate at a Cambridge-approved exam centre. The most common option is:

British Council South Africa

Locations: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town

Website: britishcouncil.org.za

Local Cambridge Exam Centres

Some Cambridge-registered private schools across South Africa accept private candidates. Always confirm subject availability, exam format, registration requirements, and deadlines directly with the school.

Registration Requirements

To register, you will typically need the following:

  • Copy of your ID or passport
  • Subject list with syllabus and component codes (provided by Saving Grace)
  • Passport-size photo
  • Proof of payment
  • Online application form completed through the exam centre (e.g., British Council website)
How Long Do You Study Before Writing?

Most private candidates prepare over 2 years:

  • Year 1: Begin syllabus and assignments (typically Grade 10)
  • Year 2: Complete syllabus, revise, write past papers (typically Grade 11 for IGCSE or Grade 12 for AS Level)

Some motivated learners fast-track their studies and complete the course in 1 year.

What Age Must You Be?

There is no official age requirement. Most students are between 15 and 18 years old when writing IGCSE or AS Level exams. Younger or older learners may write if they are prepared.

What Happens After You Write?

Once you write your exams:

  • May/June results are released in August
  • October/November results are released in January

You will receive official Cambridge results directly from your exam centre.
