Learning to Read
A CAPS-aligned reading programme for Grades R to 3, with a Reading Booster for Grades 4 to 6 who need to catch up. Interactive, self-paced, and read aloud from the first lesson, so a child who can't read yet can still work on their own. The first two lessons of every grade are free.

Learning to Read is a separate Saving Grace product with its own site, its own sign-up and its own subscription. You don’t need to be enrolled in a Saving Grace curriculum to use it, and it isn’t part of a homeschool fee.
Children learn letters, sounds, phonics, blending and comprehension through play. Every lesson is hands-on: they listen, tap, trace, speak and read. They never just watch.
It’s aligned to the CAPS Foundation Phase curriculum term by term, so it fits alongside whatever else your child is doing, whether that’s our CAPS programme, a mainstream school, or reading practice at home.

What happens inside a lesson.
Children listen, tap, trace, speak and read. Here's how a lesson actually runs.
Every lesson is read aloud
A warm South African voice reads the letters, sounds, words and stories out loud, so even a child who can't read yet can work through a lesson on their own.
Your child speaks back
They tap “Say the letter” and say its name, then “Say the sound” and say its phonics sound. The app listens for about five seconds, shows exactly what it heard, and accepts only the right answer, with friendly guidance and unlimited tries.
From letters to stories
Lessons build one step at a time: letters and sounds, then blending, then words, sentences, and full storybooks with comprehension questions.
Tests unlock the next stage
Each stage ends with a short recap and test. Your child moves on only once they pass it, so no gaps are quietly left behind.
Parents see the progress
The Parent Progress Report shows exactly what each child has completed and where they're doing well. You can set up a profile for every child in the family.
Certificates to celebrate
When a grade is finished, your child earns a printable certificate. Small thing, big moment.
A child who can't read yet can still work on their own.
That’s the whole design. Nothing on the screen assumes your child can already read it, which is what makes a reading programme a child can actually use by themselves possible in the first place.
Four grades, one path.
Each grade is a set of lessons grouped into stages. Pick your child's grade and they carry on from where they left off.

Beyond the core lessons, there's a reading scheme written here at home, and a catch-up track for older children.
Sunbird Readers 5 reading stages
Saving Grace's own reading scheme, written here rather than imported. Five stages, from first words to fluent reading, following one family. The first two books are free, and one plan unlocks the whole series including every new book as it arrives.
Reading Booster Grades 4–6
For an older child whose reading is holding the rest of school back. It builds the reading skills the content subjects assume a child already has, so Natural Science, History and Geography stop being a reading problem first and a subject problem second.
If reading is the bigger problem.
A reading course helps a child who's behind on reading. If the gap is wider than that, one of these is the better starting point.
