The Foundation Phase, Grade R to Grade 3, is the most important stretch of a child's schooling. It is where reading, writing and numeracy take root, and where a child either learns that school is safe and doable, or does not. Getting this phase right matters more than almost anything that follows.
What the Foundation Phase covers
- Reading and writing, phonics through to early comprehension.
- Numeracy, numbers, counting and the first building blocks of maths.
- Home Language (and the start of an additional language).
- Life Skills, the social, emotional and physical development that underpins learning.
Why online homeschooling suits the little ones
Young children learn best without pressure. Self-paced lessons mean no child is rushed or held back, short, engaging video lessons hold a small attention span, and learning from home keeps a young child calm and secure. A parent stays close, which is exactly what this age needs.
If reading is not clicking yet
Some children need extra help to crack reading, and that is normal. Our Learning to Read support runs alongside the curriculum for exactly this, so a slow start does not become a lasting gap.
