Intermediate & Senior guide

Homeschooling the middle years.

Grade 4 to 9 is where subjects broaden and independence grows. Here is what changes, and how self-paced learning keeps every child moving.

The Intermediate (Grade 4 to 6) and Senior (Grade 7 to 9) phases are where school gets wider: more subjects, more depth, and the first real preparation for the exit years. It is also where children start to pull ahead or fall behind, which is exactly where self-paced online learning earns its keep.

What these years cover

  • Languages and Mathematics deepen through both phases.
  • Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology broaden the picture.
  • By the Senior Phase, EMS, Life Orientation and Creative Arts round out the full subject spread.

Placed by level, not just age

A child can be ahead in one subject and behind in another. Because Saving Grace is self-paced and places by level, your child works where they actually are in each subject, stretched from there rather than pushed or held back.

Catching up, if you need to

If your child has slipped behind, the middle years are a good time to close the gap before the exit phase. Remedial CAPS re-paces the same curriculum to help them catch up while staying on the accredited track.

Setting up for matric

Grade 9 is the bridge into the FET phase. Strong habits and a solid base here make Grade 10 to 12 far smoother, which is why keeping a child engaged and on-level through these years pays off later.

Middle-years questions.

My child is behind. Can they catch up?
Yes. Placement by level plus Remedial CAPS lets a child close the gap without shame, on the accredited curriculum.
Can a strong learner move ahead?
Absolutely. Self-paced means a ready child can cover ground faster, even more than a grade in a year in some cases.
Can we join mid-year?
Yes. Grades 1 to 9 have open enrolment, so you can start straight away.
